Pros and cons of working for a US government contractor?

Benefits of working with Government Contracting Companies

Anytime you visit a federal agency you will notice not only government employees working there but also some private contractors from government contracting companies, though you may not be able to tell them apart. These two work side by side and many of these government contractors work directly under the management of government supervisors. Contracting companies help the government in driving various projects related to security, procurement, IT and digital transformations, and so on, while allowing the latter to support the masses through a mutually beneficial arrangement. DIGITALSPEC is one such government contracting company that helps in fulfilling the IT and digital transformational needs of government projects in the US, while collaborating with many small, medium, and large enterprises in meeting the needs of government projects as well. Let’s look into a few benefits of working with government contracting companies.

An easier alternative to government

It’s an open secret that government jobs are notoriously hard to secure, especially those that actually pay well. It’s is a long and arduous process to get a good government job. Instead, you can try for a job in a government contracting company where the hiring and promotion process is relatively easier. This is because contractors generally require US citizens with very specific skillsets such as PhDs in physics. but they don’t usually receive as much attention as government jobs due to the ‘honor’ and ‘job security’ associated with the latter.

Higher compensation

Besides the easy hiring and promotion process government contracting companies also offer appealing salary packages. Contractors, especially large ones can receive contracts worth upward of a $100M, allowing for rather lucrative salaries and bonuses for the employees, whereas government jobs usually peak around $200K — even the highest office in the land maxes out at $400K.

An appealing package

Sometimes, depending on the size and culture of the government contractor, you may not receive the highest compensation. However, you will almost certainly receive an appealing overall package with health insurance, 401K, and PTO (paid time off). This is especially nowadays with a nationwide labor shortage, especially in STEM fields.

A Different Way In

Working for a contracting company doesn’t have to be your end goal. If you’re one of those patriots who are bent on serving the nation but couldn’t quite get through the door, a GovCon job can be a great way to get your foot through the door. Not only do contracting jobs offer valuable experience, they also offer the opportunity to connect with contracting officers in US agencies, such as the DoD, FBI, CIA, DOE, Pentagon, etc., depending on who you are working with. And given how bureaucracy is basically the same the world over, those connections could mean the difference between getting that coveted public service job the next time you apply.

Relatively immune to government shutdowns

Nowadays, it seems that the US government is always 2 months away from a shutdown, with the congress swooping in to save the day by raising the debt ceiling only a few days beforehand. It really begs the question: Are government jobs really that safe? 🤔

Imagine this: The government shuts down because of political dog fighting in the congress and their failure to raise the debt ceiling for the millionth time. You are working in the department of education. What will you do? How do you get paid?

Fortunately, there is an alternative: Government Contractors. While not completely immune to economic swings, and yes, while your job security will be dependent on how you perform to a greater degree, you may well be able to survive an economic shutdown, provided you are competent and valuable enough to the company.
