Government contractors are those who provide goods or services to the federal government. In the United States, the top 100 government contractors account for over $500 billion in spending each year. The top three contractors are Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and General Dynamics. These companies provide a variety of goods and services, from aircraft and missiles to information technology and engineering. Government contracting is a complex and regulated field, with strict rules governing how contracts are awarded and how performance is measured. As a result, the top government contractors are often large and well-established companies with extensive experience in meeting the demands of the federal government.
But of course, they don’t have to be. The SBA (Small Business Administration) ensures that small, native, and/or minority owned businesses with aspirations of working with the government also stand a chance at securing contracts and fulfilling their dreams. One such way it does this is through set-aside contracts.
To help provide a level playing field for small businesses, the government limits competition for certain contracts to small businesses. Those contracts are called “small business set-asides,” and they help small businesses compete for and win federal contracts. But we get ahead of ourselves. The top five contractors are Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, General Dynamics, and Northrop Grumman. These five companies alone accounted for $217 billion in government contracts in 2018.
In recent years in large part to the pandemic, Biotech companies have also emerged as major players making billions by working with the government. Pfizer, for example, has numerous vaccines that it sells directly to the public but also secured multiple $1B+ contracts with the US government to manufacture COVID-19 vaccines.
